Make These Super Soft Butter Rolls

This recipe turns out the most irresistibly delicious yeast rolls. With recipes for flavored butters too, you’ll create the best side dish ever.

These butter rolls come out of the oven with a golden brown crust and soft, pillowy insides–the best of both worlds. 

How Long Does it Take to Make These Rolls?

This recipe only has one rise time. Depending on the temperature of your kitchen, the rolls should be risen and ready to bake somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes.  

Ingredients Needed for These Amazing Buns

Milk. Skim, 1%, 2%, or whole–your choice.
Butter. Unsalted is preferred since you’ll be adding salt.
Active dry yeast. Read more about the difference between active dry yeast and instant yeast below.
Warm water. The sweet spot for activating active dry yeast without killing it is 110
Bread flour. In this recipe, bread flour was used. It’s this bread flour that gives the rolls their nice chewy texture.

The Difference Between Active Dry Yeast and Instant Yeast

Active dry yeast must be “activated” by dissolving the granules in warm water. Once dissolved, the yeast should begin to foam and grow within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, the yeast is bad and you should throw it out. Active dry yeast is highly perishable; always check the expiration date before use.

You can use active dry yeast in a recipe calling for instant yeast by activating it according to package directions, using a portion of milk or water from the recipe rather than additional liquids.

Instant yeast is guaranteed to be 100% active, so it’s ready for use straight from the package. Thanks to its long shelf life, instant yeast is safe to buy in bulk. 

To use instant yeast in place of active dry yeast, incorporate directly into the dry ingredients. Add any ingredients used for proofing (warm water, sugar) to the dough along with other liquid ingredients.

Super Soft Butter Rolls

INGREDIENTS (makes 18 rolls)

¾ C. milk
¼ C. butter
1 tsp. salt
¼ C. plus 1 tsp. sugar, divided
2 (.25 oz.) pkgs. active dry yeast
½ C. warm water (110°)
1 egg, lightly beaten
3½ C. bread flour, plus more for kneading
Butter for brushing, softened


Pour milk into a glass 2-cup measuring cup and microwave until it boils. Add the butter, salt, and ¼ cup sugar; set aside until the temperature drops below 110°.

In a big bowl, dissolve the yeast and the remaining 1 teaspoon sugar in the warm water; let stand until it foams, about 10 minutes.

Pour the milk mixture into the yeast mixture; add the egg and 2 cups of the bread flour. Stir until smooth. Stir in the remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, until the dough is smooth and a little tacky. Knead lightly on a floured surface to pull the dough together. Shape into a ball and place in a big oiled bowl; turn to coat the dough. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until light and airy.

Preheat your oven to 350° and line two square baking pans with parchment paper. Divide dough into 18 even pieces, forming smooth balls with floured fingers; arrange half in each pan.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately butter the tops.

Cranberry-Orange Butter
Whisk together ½ C. very soft butter, 3 T. chopped cranberries, 2 T. honey, and orange zest to taste.

Cinnamon-Honey Butter
Whisk together ½ C. very soft butter, 2 T. sifted powdered sugar, 2½ T. honey, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 1 tsp. ground cinnamon.
