What does your oven have in common with a campfire? They’re both the perfect place to cook these fabulous Hot Deli Sandwiches! This combination of sourdough bread, hot meats, and thrilling vegetables make this ideal for a relaxing lunch or a dinner under the stars!
Hot Deli Sandwiches Recipe
Ingredients you will need:
- 8 slices sourdough Bread
- 5 to 6 oz. thinly sliced deli ham
- 5 to 6 oz. thinly sliced smoked turkey
- 5 to 6 oz. thinly sliced pastrami
- 4 thin slices sweet onion
- 2/3 C. sliced fresh mushrooms
- 2/3 C. sliced green bell peppers
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 4 slices provolone cheese
Slice loaf of sourdough bread into 8 slices.
Place 5-6 ounces of thinly sliced deli ham, smoked turkey, and pastrami onto 4 slices of bread.
Place slices of onion on top of meat. The Rada Stubby Butcher Knife is great for chopping onions and other vegetables.
Add slices of green pepper to sandwich.
Add sliced mushrooms. Feel free to leave out any of the vegetables if anyone eating the sandwiches doesn’t care for them.
Add crumbled bacon.
Add 1 slice provolone to each sandwich. Place slice of sourdough on top of each, completing the sandwich.
Wrap sandwiches in aluminum foil.
Be certain to keep the shiny side in. This side reflects heat, meaning it is best that it face the sandwich itself. Place in preheated 350 degree oven or over the campfire for 10 to 15 minutes (make sure to monitor the campfire cooking process closely to make sure you don’t burn your dinner!).
Remove from heat. Sandwich should be hot to touch, while cheese should be melted.
Serve and enjoy!

Hi, Kristy in the Rada Kitchen, and today I’m making a recipe out of our Fix It In Foil recipe book. This is a book filled with tasty recipes with easy cleanup which you make in foil. Once you’re done eating it, you throw the foil away. You can make them in the stove, on a campfire, or on your grill. It has instructions with each recipe on how long to bake them in each situation. And today I’m going to make Hot Sourdough Deli Sandwiches. And even if you have a little fire pit in your back yard, it’s great, you just set them in the coals for about 10 minutes, and you’re done!
So you’re going to need 4 sheets of 14 inch, heavy duty foil. Here I have a loaf of sourdough bread. I’m going to slice that into 8 slices for 4 sandwiches. I wanted to show you how easy this Rada Serrated Bread Slicer works. Now, when you use a serrated knife, you want to use a sawing action and the knife is going to do the work for you. You don’t want to push it down because you’ll smash that bread. I’m cutting them about a half inch.
We need about 5 to 6 ounces of smoked turkey that has been thinly sliced. And then I have 5 to 6 ounces of deli ham, thinly sliced, and 5 to 6 ounces of pastrami. I’m just going to layer those on the bread slices.
Once you have the meat evenly placed, we’re going to add a thin slice of onion. These are great sandwiches. You can even have your oven turned on. Great for church or a picnic or a campfire, just make sure you put double the tin foil on. This is the Rada Stubby Butcher Knife. Speaking of church, a lot of churches fundraise by selling Rada knives. Some people speak of using their Rada knives for over 30 years. People are happy to buy these because they know they’re going to last a long time.
Now we’re going to add a thin slice of green pepper. Again, if you have someone in your family that doesn’t care for onion or green pepper, you can always leave it off. And then I’m just going to add some slices of mushrooms. Now, we add everyone’s favorite, crumbled bacon. And then you’ll need 4 slices of provolone cheese. You can make these when you’re going to go camping, you can wrap them up and put them in the refrigerator so they’re ready to go in the oven or the campfire coals.
And now we’re going to put the top of the bread back on. And now we’re going to wrap them in the tinfoil. Again, you want to put the shiny side inside, because the shiny side reflects heat so you want to bring that heat in and keep it there, make sure it’s on the shiny side. Fold it down so it’s tight against that sandwich. Now our sandwiches are ready to be cooked. You can put them in an oven preheated to 350 degrees. Put them on the center rack and bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Or you can place double wrapped foil packs on medium hot embers on your campfire and cook 8 to 10 minutes. You’ll want to turn them once during that heating time. Or place on a preheated grill on medium heat, place indirectly, not directly over the fire or the heat source, put the lid on, cook 10 to 15 minutes or until heated through, and again, you’ll want to turn them over once during the heating process.
So our sandwiches are ready to serve. You can see that hot, melted cheese. This would be good with Dijon mustard, or yellow mustard, mayonnaise, other cheese combinations, like American, Swiss, or Monterey Jack. It’s a really yummy recipe, and there are more in the Fix It In Foil recipe book.
