What Exactly is Cajun Cuisine?

“Cajun” is a style of cooking popular in the Louisiana area of the United Sates. It originated from French-speaking immigrants that settled in Louisiana around 1755. It is a rustic cuisine that is traditionally prepared from ingredients that were naturally available in the Louisiana area.

The aromatic vegetables green bell pepper, onion, and celery are popular in Cajun appetizers (we use two of these veggies in the recipe below). Parsley, bay leaf, green onions, cayenne pepper, black pepper are common spices used in Cajun dishes.

Tip: Cajun seasoning is a pre-mixed blend of these spices that is commonly available at grocery stores. It makes it easy to add Cajun flavor to any dish!

This easy Cajun Chicken Dip recipe combines all of the traditional flavors of Cajun cuisine into one delicious dip.

Hi there! It’s Jess in the Rada Kitchen, thanks for joining me. Today we’re going to make a Cajun chicken dip. We’re going to toss in a handful of veggies, cover it with some pepper jack cheese, give it just the right amount of kick, and then bake it off in the oven. Let’s go ahead and chop some peppers!

First we’re going to chop our red pepper. We’re going to use about ¼ cup. I’m going to come in with my Rada Cook’s Knife and section this off. Now for our green bell pepper. If you really wanted to add some kick to this you could use some chopped jalapeno. We’re going to throw in some hot sauce here. You can make it as hot or mild as you like. And now we’re going to smash and chop 1 garlic clove.

Now we have 2 green onions to chop. Here I have a chicken breast that I’ve already baked off. You can use any chicken you have on hand, whether it’s cubed or shredded. We’re going to make some strips and cube ours. Turn it around and then come back through. We’re going to have a nice little dice when we’re done.

Then we’re going to add chopped chicken, vegetables, a package of Neufchatel cheese, and a combination of olive oil mayonnaise and some Greek yogurt. Now we’re going to add in our Cajun seasoning, which I’m going to give a pretty liberal shake. To this I’m going to add a few shots of hot sauce. Then give it a good stir.

So here I have 1 package of shredded pepper jack cheese and I’m going to add half of it to our mixture and we’ll top the other half right at the very end. Now into our Rad Square Baker, let’s just ladle all of that delicious creaminess down. You can see this makes a nice, big batch. Smooth it out. And we are going to cover this with our cheese and bake it at 350 degrees.

So here we have our cheesy, baked Cajun chicken dip. You can serve it with crackers or any other kind of vegetable. Thanks so much for joining me today! Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel, and visit our website at RadaCutlery.com.
