Firecracker Fruit Salad
Celebrate the 4th of July with a traditional summer-time watermelon fruit salad. Use the watermelon as a serving bowl and you won’t have to worry about clean up. You can add even more sparkle to your fruit bowl by adding watermelon stars.
What you will need:
- 1 whole watermelon-medium to large
- 1 pint of blueberries
- 3 bananas
- lemon juice
- wooden skewers
In this blog post you will find pictures for each step, links to purchase the Rada Cutlery knives and utensils used in this recipe and also a video demonstration of the Firecracker Fruit Salad recipe.
Easy step by step instructions:
Choose a medium to large seedless watermelon to create your bowl.
Slice lengthways down the middle all the way through with a long knife like the Rada Ham Slicer.
Scoop out the watermelon into another bowl. The Rada Ice Cream Scoop makes this step easy!
Make diagonal cuts around the rim of the watermelon to make a decorative edge.
Slice the other half of the watermelon into thin slices. The same thickness as your star cookie cutter.
Cut out star shaped watermelon pieces using a star cookie cutter!
Spear watermelon stars onto a wooden skewer. Cut skewers to different lengths for varying levels of height. Make as many stars on a stick that you wish.
Push the skewers into the bottom of the watermelon bowl.
Return the watermelon you scooped out to the watermelon bowl. For a red, white and blue theme add blueberries and bananas.
Helpful note: Dip bananas in lemon juice to prevent browning.
Add any remaining watermelon stars to the top of the salad.
Ready to eat and enjoy!

The Rada Ham Slicer was designed to give you evenly sliced ham, beef roasts, pork loins and turkey with every cut. Now you can even slice watermelon with ease.
The Rada Ice Cream Scoop was designed to give you that extra leverage when scooping out that extra hard ice cream. But ice cream isn’t the only food you can use it for. Use it to scoop out watermelon, squash and pumpkins. You can even use it as a serving spoon with potato salad or mashed potatoes.
The Rada Peeling Paring Knife has the perfect blade length to garnish small fruits and vegetables.

Hi, Kristi at the Rada Kitchen and today I am going to make a watermelon into a cute little basket. I’m going to make some watermelon stars and I’m going to serve it along with our flag fruit kabobs.
To slice the watermelon I am going to use our Ham Slicer. The Rada Ham Slicer is just the right length to cut through that watermelon. I’ll cut it into slices with the Rada Super Parer and then I’ll make a decorative edge with our Peeling Paring Knife.
So you’ll want to cut the watermelon a little above the half. Then lay it on the side. The nice long blade of the Ham Slicer makes it easy to cut through.
You want the watermelon half to sit level. You can level it by taking a little slice off the bottom and now it sits real level. Now just cut around the edge with the Super Parer just to the rind. A customer told us how he used an Ice Cream Scoop to hollow out the watermelon, so with the Scoop you can easily cut out serving size pieces. It scoops it out just like ice cream and if you have really hard ice cream, it easily maneuvers that wedge of ice cream right out of the container. It has just a little bit of a sharp edge on it. You cannot bend it; it is very strong so you don’t have to worry about how hard the ice cream is.
Alright, so scoop this out and save the watermelon. Scoop it out just to the rind. Then for a decorative touch using the Rada Peeling Paring you can start about anyway and cut diagonal slices around the edge. It makes a pretty little decorative edge. Now it did this on the Rada Cutting Board so you can easily bend it and throw away the scraps.
Now I’ll show how to make the watermelon stars. With the other half, come back with the Ham Slicer and cut the end off. Then measure the next slice according to the depth of the cookie cutter. You want to cut it the size of the cookie cutter. I like the length of the Ham Knife to do this because you can do it all in one cut. Now the easy part is take your cookie cutter and make little stars. Then put them on a skewer. You can make as many stars as you like. I’m going to make three.
Then fill the bowl with the watermelon you removed. I made some extra stars so I am going to put those on the top. If you want a red, white and blue theme you can add some bananas and blueberries.
There you have what I call a Firecracker Fruit Bowl for any 4th of July Party. It’s healthy and it’s easy.
