How to Make Apple Dumplings

Ingredients you will need:

Apple Dumpling Ingredients

  • 1 (8 oz.) tube refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 large Granny Smith or Gala apple, peeled and cored
  • 1/2 C. butter
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1/4 C. brown sugar
  • 1/2 t. ground cinnamon
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 (12 oz.) can Mountain Dew soda
  • Vanilla or cinnamon ice cream, optional

Peel your apples for apple dumplings

First peel your Granny Smith or Gala Apple. The Rada Cutlery Vegetable Peeler works great for peeling apples quickly because of its double-edge blade. Once the apple is peeled, slice it into eight slices. We used the Rada Cutlery Heavy Duty Paring Knife for this step. Then remove the seeds from the slices.

Wrap apple in crescent roll

Open the crescent rolls and separate them. Take a crescent triangle and wrap it around an apple slice. Be sure that the edges are covered. Continue this for the remaining seven apple slices.

Place the apples you just wrapped in crescent rolls into an greased 8″x 8″ pan several inches apart.

Make Apple Dumpling Sauce

In a sauce pan place the butter, sugar and brown sugar and melt while stirring to combine the ingredients.

Remove the sauce from the heat and add vanilla.

Pour sauce over apple dumplings

Pour the sauce over the dumplings. Then pour the soda around the edges of the pan.

Finished Southern Apple Dumplings

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 to 45 minutes.

Regular paring Knife cutting apple

Do you love fall baking but never know what apples to pick? Here are five apples you cannot go wrong with for your next dessert.

Granny Smith: This is a very versatile apple. Many bakers call this their go to apple for fall desserts like apple pies because of its sweet and tart flavor.

Honeycrisp: This apple is great for baking or caramelizing. The apple will stay firm when being cooked and keep its sweet flavor.

Mutsu or better known as Crispin: This apple is great for pies, crisp and other autumn recipes. Its sweet flavor is similar to a Golden Delicious.

Cortland: This apple is larger than the McIntosh and the crisp tart flavor is great for apple sauces, salads and many desserts.

Gala: This apple is perfect for snacking and baking. It is a milder apple with a sweet flavor. The Gala apple is perfect for sauces.

Hi, Kristi in Rada Kitchen and I’d like to share a recipe with you from one of our 101 Recipes using apples cookbook. This is a cookbook for everything from appetizers to main dishes to desserts.  And what I am going to make today is Southern Apple Dumplings.

The ingredients you will need is a half a cup of granulated sugar, a ¼ cup of brown sugar, a half a can of lemon-lime or Mountain Dew soda, a teaspoon of vanilla, a half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a 8 oz. tube of refrigerated crescent roll dough, a half a cup of butter, and a large Granny Smith or Gala apple.

So the first thing you need to do is peel and core your Granny Smith or Gala apple. I am going to use the Rada vegetable peeler. It’s really easy to get that peeling off the apple. Now this is a two-sided blade on this peeler so right-handed people and left-handed people can use it—super sharp it peels it in seconds. And I am going to cut it into eight slices using Rada Heavy Duty Paring Knife. It has that really sharp pointed tip and it makes it easy to slice.

Then you want to take out the seeds. Alright so open your tube of crescent rolls and you’ll want to separate them. And then in each triangle you are going to roll up an apple slice. Make sure you seal the edges. And then you will place these in an 8″ x 8″ baking pan. I am going to use the Rada stoneware so it doesn’t need to be greased or pre-seasoned. If you are using a glass or metal one you want to make sure you season that.

So in a small sauce pan on the stove melt half a cup of butter, to that we’re going to add sugar, the brown sugar, and the cinnamon and just stir that until its blended. And this is the Rada Non-Scratch plain spoon and as you can see it really scraps the bottom of that pan. It has an edge that fits the corner of the pan and gets on the bottom and it won’t scratch your non-scratch pans. So once you have that all blended you will removed it from the heat and add the vanilla.

Then we will pour it evenly over the dumplings. And now with your half a can of lemon lime soda or Mountain Dew you will pour around the edge of the pan. Now bake this in a 350 degree pre-heated oven for 35-45 minutes. Southern Apple Dumplings great served with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. This is just one of our recipes in our 101 Recipes with Apples.
