What is Sushi?
For decades, sushi’s place in American cuisine has grown exponentially. But just what is sushi?
In short, it’s a Japanese dish made of cooked vinegared rice, garnished with seafood, vegetables, and other foods. Although it has existed in Japan for hundreds of years, it wasn’t properly introduced to America until the 1960’s, and didn’t start to take off in popularity until the 1980’s.

Hi, I’m Chef Ted, I’m here at the Rada Cutlery kitchen, and today we’re going to do something fun, the kids are like getting involved, it’s candy sushi. First off, we’re going to take about 2 tablespoons of butter, put it into a pan over low heat, and to that we’re going to add about 24 marshmallows.
Before I get the marshmallows in, I’m going to take some dried apples and cut them up into little strips. I’m also going to cut up a little bit of dried pineapple the same way. Open up some of our fruit roll-ups. We’ve got our butter melted down so we’re going to throw the marshmallows in. This is on low heat so it does take a little while for them to melt, you don’t want them melting too fast.
I’ve got the butter and the marshmallow melted down. Now I’m going to add in about 4 cups of Rice Krispies. Then we’re going to take a little bit of the rice mixture and spread that around. Now we’re going to take one of the red pieces of liquorice and just make it like sushi. Put a bit of everything in there. Little bit of apple, little bit of pineapple, and then grab this front edge and pack it down in there just like you’re making sushi.
I’ve got a pan of hot water, and I’m dipping the edge of the knife in it, getting the end good and hot, and now we’re just going to cut it like sushi.
And there you have some candy sushi that would be great for the kids to help with!
