Fresh is Best!

Everyone loves sweet corn! Even  self-professed vegetable haters, children and adults alike, still love the taste of sweet corn. There is something special about corn on the cob served steaming hot and slathered with butter. But sweet corn waits for no one, so the sooner you serve it the better – before the sweet sugars turn to starch.

Which is the Best Knife for Cutting Corn Off the Cob?

Everyone has their own special “go to” knife or utensil in the kitchen. The same goes for the best knife to cut the corn off the cob. We have compiled a list of 4 knives and 1 utensil that our customers and the employees at Rada Mfg. Co. have expressed their love for when it is time to cut corn.

Removing corn from cob

An all around favorite is the Rada Stubby Butcher knife. With it’s 5 3/8″ blade and large comfortable handle you can easily cut bushels of corn.

An employee favorite is the Super Parer. This all around go-to knife is the largest of the paring knives Rada has to offer. The large handle provides comfort while cutting and the 4 3/8″ tapered blade is razor sharp to make cutting corn fast and easy.

Rada Vegetable Peeler with Corn

The utensil that received the most suggestions by our customers is the Deluxe Peeler and we have to agree with them. This is probably the fastest cutting  tool when it comes to removing the kernels from the cob at lightning speeds. The Deluxe Peeler features an incredibly sharp blade that swivels with the shape of the corn cob  and can be used by both right and left handed users. Give it a try the next time you are cutting corn, you might be surprised.

Another customer suggestion that we receive the most mentions is the Tomato Slicer. While slicing tomatoes was the main focus on the development of the Tomato Slicer we have found that it works like a charm on other vegetables such as cutting corn. The dual serrated blade ensures a straight cut and will stay sharp for lifetime.

Corn Cutting Knives.Still005Our last suggested corn cutting knife is the Serrated Steak Knife. The smaller serrations on the blade ensure a clean, easy cut cob after cob. And there is no need to stop to resharpen it, because the serrated blade will hold its edge for many years.

How Cook Sweet Corn on the Cob Video Transcript:

Hi, Kristy in the Rada kitchen, and I’d like to show you my favorite way to cook corn on the cob. The first thing you want to do, of course, is remove the husk and the silk. Now, a neater way to do this is you can husk it in the microwave.

I have another video on that. Or you can do it by hand. If you want more of the silk removed, it’s okay if it’s on there, but you can take a vegetable brush and remove it. So once you have that done, I have a large pot on the stove, and I have the water to a boil. I’ll just add the sweet corn to that, and I’m going to boil it for two minutes.

So once the corn has boiled for two minutes, you’ll remove it from the heat, put a lid on it, and let it sit for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, your corn is ready to eat. It’s especially good with real butter. Enjoy!

The Best Knife to Cut Sweet Corn Video Transcript:

Hi, Kristy at the Rada kitchen and I’d like to share with you some of our favorite knives to use when removing the corn from the cob. It’s also a few of our customers’ suggestions.

The one I like to go to is the Stubby Butcher’s Knife. It has a good, sturdy blade, it has a nice long handle, so it’s easy to grip, it’s not too long. So you first want to set the corn with the bottom down. And I’m using the Rada cutting board, it’s going to be easy to fold and put the corn into my bowl. You want to make sure you don’t go too deep into the cob. I like to do what they call “milk it.” Run the knife down, get all of the juices out of the cob. So that’s the Stubby Butcher.

Another employee favorite is the Super Parer. It’s not quite as long as the Stubby Butcher, but it still has that nice, big handle. She said if you’re doing a lot of corn, your hand won’t get tired. Again, it works great to cut the corn off.

Now the next one, we had a regular sized peeler, but we developed this Deluxe Peeler, we had a lot of people say they were using our Vegetable Peeler to remove the corn from the cob, so we came out with this Deluxe Peeler. It has a bigger handle, little longer blade. That works really fast, and still can go back and milk the cob.

Another knife our customers tell us they like to use is the Tomato Slicer. Like I said, it’s not just for tomatoes, it works great on sweet corn too. With that serrated blade, you have to use a little sawing action.

And another customer favorite is the Serrated Steak Knife. That’s just a few of our employees’ favorite knives, and our customers’ favorite knives to remove corn from the cob. if you have a favorite knife that you use in the kitchen for something unusual, let us know, we’d be happy to hear from you. Give us a call at 1-800-311-9691.
